The University of Miami Libraries seeks an archivist to plan, organize, and implement systems and procedures for maintaining manuscript collections in the Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) with the goal of preserving and improving access to these collections.

THE LIBRARY: The University of Miami Libraries (www.library.miami.edu) ranks among the top 50 research libraries in North America with a combined collection of approximately 3 million volumes, 48,000 current serials, and over 33,000 E-journal titles. The Otto G. Richter Library lies in the heart of the campus and serves as the central library for the University. Other University of Miami libraries include the Paul Buisson Architecture Library, the Judi Prokop Newman Business Information Resource Center, and the Marta & Austin Weeks Music Library, the Marine and Atmospheric Science Library, and the Louis Calder Memorial Library. The campus also has an independent Law library. The Libraries provide support and services for approx. 10,100 undergraduates, 5,100 graduate students, and 10,000 full and part time faculty and staff. The Libraries has a staff of 37 Librarians and 86 support staff and is a member of ARL, ASERL, CLIR, NERL, OCLC, RLG, and SOLINET.
The Cuban Heritage Collection is located within the 10,000 square foot Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion housed in the Otto G. Richter Library. The Collection spans nearly 400 years and contains over 250,000 items including rare books, journals, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, and archival collections including personal papers, postcards, photographs, oral histories, maps, posters, and ephemera. These materials date from Cuba’s early colonial period through the present, and the Cuban exile experience. POSITION: Reporting to the Deputy Chair and Chief Operations Manager for the Cuban Heritage Collection, the Archivist coordinates the processing of permanent and historically valuable materials to include appraising, accessioning, arranging, describing, preserving, and deaccessioning archival collections and materials; coordinates the development, implementation, and management of initiatives relating to the CHC’s Web sites and digital collections; participates in the coordination of educational and outreach activities; keeps abreast of relevant technology, literature, and studies for current awareness of trends, developments, and best practices in librarianship and archival processes; serves on/participates in Libraries and University organizations, committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA accredited master’s degree, an ALA approved overseas equivalent, or a Ph.D. with appropriate research, academic, or biomedical library experience; relevant experience in an academic or research library, including at least one year of experience in special collections or archives at a paraprofessional or professional level; demonstrated knowledge of archival appraisal, preservation, arrangement, description, and access theories and procedures; familiarity with issues, trends, principles and practices in archives and special collections; oral and written fluency in English and Spanish; excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to assess objectives and operational requirements to develop and implement suitable policies and procedures; strong commitment to excellence in service; experience in using personal computers and related software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access; familiarity with Web development tools; ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; demonstrated initiative and flexibility. Preferred: Scholarly knowledge of Cuban, Cuban exile, and Cuban-American history and culture; Coursework or other formal training in archival management; knowledge of EAD, DACS, and issues in digital imaging projects; supervisory experience; effective experience in project planning, management, and completion.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications of the person selected. This is a visiting two-year non-tenure track twelve-month faculty appointment at the Assistant rank.
