Job description:
The Digital Collections Librarian (Librarian) will have an important role in a team-oriented environment to develop and manage the Library's digital collections under the supervision of the Director of Forsyth Library.
The candidate should be self-motivated, service-oriented, and interested in applying information technology to library services. The successful candidate will work with an ATIZ planetary scanner, a Dell workstation and CONTENTdm while building digital libraries that include rare space exploration documents and artifacts, ethnic heritage photographs and documents, national trails historical documents, Benjamin Franklin letters, and other rare or historic documents. This position includes some night and weekend shifts.
Digital Collection Responsibilities:
• Consult with faculty and other producers of digital media for the creation of digital libraries and digital repositories
• Work with technical staff, librarians, the university community and local/regional entities to identify materials to be transferred to digital media
• Coordinate workflow for digitizing and cataloging digital collections
• Catalog and assign metadata to digital materials
• Identify external funding sources and participate in grant writing
• Apply current digital library community benchmarks, best practices, and standards where appropriate
• Consult with appropriate campus personnel regarding copyright, licensing and rights management issues related to digital collections
• Collaborate with the Forsyth Library’s archivist to implement, monitor, and maintain digital preservation practices for both born digital and migrated resources
• Provide copyright, intellectual property and rights management consultation for faculty
• Identify digital information trends/planning for the future
• Promote the use of the library’s digital collections
• Supervise student interns
Qualifications:
Required: A master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution, or coursework towards this degree. Knowledge of current trends in digital library development, digitization standards, long-term management and preservation, and rights management issues relating to digital materials. Knowledge and experience with cataloging and metadata protocols. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, both independently and collaboratively. Strong commitment to customer service, excellent interpersonal skills, and effective written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated organizational ability and problem-solving skills. Interest in and potential for establishing a record of professional achievement and service to faculty and students. Ability to manage project teams and a broad range of tasks in response to varying time pressures with shifting priorities and changing constraints. Ability to maintain a systematic perspective. Ability to interact effectively with a broad variety of people within the library, the university, the community, and with peers from other institutions on collaborative initiatives.
Preferred: Experience or coursework work dealing with digital collections. Demonstrated aptitude for and interest in project planning and management, technical services, electronic resource management, or related areas. Experience in using bibliographic utilities, such as OCLC; integrated Library systems, particularly the Ex Libris Voyager system and content management systems such as CONTENTdm.
