Brief project description:

The Iowa Journalists Oral History Project is the world's first video-streaming oral history website of journalists. For more details, see http://www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/journalists/index2.htm.

 

The project involves migrating the existing proprietary, non-standards-based solution (see http://www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/journalists/) to a solution comprised of standards-based metadata solution such as PBCore , more universally available delivery video format, e.g., Flash video, and potentially, a Flash front-end.

 

Examples of key activities:

  • Digital collection development.
  • Metadata scheme application.
  • Information design.

 

Number of students that can be accommodated: 1-2

 

Duration: Fall '07

 

Training:

  • Desirable skills:
    • Knowledgeable about metadata.
    • Working knowledge of database management systems.
    • Exposure to web standards/techniques (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and application development (e.g., web services, CGIs, XML, etc.).
    • Working knowledge of Flash ActionScript
    • Exposure to IP video.
    • Knowledge/experience with database standards (e.g., XML, ODBC, SQL), database-to-web techniques and middleware (e.g., XSLT, PHP, Flash, ASP.NET) and database management systems (e.g., MS SQL Server/Access, Oracle, FileMaker Pro).

Skills that will be acquired

    • Thorough understanding of PBCore metadata.
    • Knowledge of streaming media file formats and best practices.
    • Exposure to video formats and delivering video over IP.
    • Designing and implementing how best to display search results for this particular application.

 Software/Hardware involved: Virage Solution Server, XML, PHP, WindowsMedia, Flash video, Flash ActionScript, FileMaker Pro, and PBCore metadata.
