Brief project description:
Collaborate on the development of a multi-user, general purpose, web-enabled, searchable, video collection that allows users to specify video clips using a Flash-based interface.
Examples of key activities:
- Digital media collection development.
- Map customized descriptive data to standards-based metadata, e.g., PBCore.
Number of students that can be accommodated: 1-2.
Duration: Fall 07 onwards.
Training:
- Desirable skills:
- Knowledgeable about metadata.
- Working knowledge of database management systems.
- Exposure to web standards/techniques (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and application development (e.g., web services, CGIs, XML, etc.).
- Working knowledge of Flash ActionScript
- Exposure to IP video.
- Knowledge/experience with database standards (e.g., XML, ODBC, SQL), database-to-web techniques and middleware (e.g., XSLT, PHP, Flash, ASP.NET) and database management systems (e.g., MS SQL Server/Access, Oracle, FileMaker Pro).
- Skills that will be acquired
- Thorough understanding of PBCore metadata.
- Knowledge of streaming media file formats and best practices.
- Exposure to video formats and delivering video over IP.
Software/Hardware involved: XML, Flash video, Flash ActionScript, PHP, FileMaker Pro, and PBCore metadata.
Tangible end product if any: A multi-user, general purpose, web-enabled, searchable, video collection that allows users to specify video clips using a Flash-based interface.
