Work with faculty in other departments in the College of Dentistry to develop metadata schemes for their content domain. Incorporate the new metadata into the existing web-enabled database solution.
Examples of key activities:
- Developing a metadata scheme and applying it to an existing collection of media..
- Furthering the development of a web-enabled searchable digital media collection.
- Identifying methods to identify end user digital information needs.
- Developing and organizing searchable media collections.
Number of students that can be accommodated: 1-2.
Duration: Fall 07 onwards
Training:
- Desirable skills:
- Knowledgeable about metadata.
- Working knowledge of database management systems.
- Exposure to web standards/techniques (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and application development (e.g., web services, CGIs, XML, etc.).
- Exposure to IP video.
- Knowledge/experience with database standards (e.g., XML, ODBC, SQL), database-to-web techniques and middleware (e.g., XSLT, PHP, Flash, ASP.NET) and database management systems (e.g., MS SQL Server/Access, Oracle, FileMaker Pro).
- Skills that will be acquired
- Thorough understanding of developing metadata schemes and applying them in an educational setting.
- Knowledge of streaming media file formats and best practices.
- Designing and implementing how best to display search results for this particular application.
Software/Hardware involved: FileMaker Pro, Flash ActionScript, PHP, Flash video.
