The Idaho State University Eli M. Oboler Library is seeking a Systems Librarian.  The position is a full time, 12-month appointment, tenure-track faculty position reporting to the Assistant University Librarian for Library Systems.

Responsibilities

Coordinates use of the Library’s Integrated Library System and maintenance of the Library’s web site. Advises and collaborates with colleagues concerning effective use of these library systems.  Acts as secondary backup for a broad range of software and hardware platforms and client server technology. Serves as member of Library faculty by participating in instruction, reference, and collection development duties. This position reports to the Assistant University Librarian for Library Systems.

Duties include:

Coordinates activities related to the Integrated Library System (currently Voyager, provided by Ex Libris). Activities include:

  • Recommending and implementing changes to the Voyager software via the System Administration client

  • Installation of client software on staff computers for acquisitions, circulation, cataloging, reporter, call slip and system administration modules

  • Installation of client and server software for interlibrary loan module, includes software on Voyager server, Libpublic (Windows server), and staff computers

  • Maintenance, training, and use of staff and public modules, with emphasis on the web-based OPAC (online public access catalog)

  • Advising and collaborating with staff on needs and configuration issues

  • Installing patches and upgrades to Voyager server software as needed

  • Troubleshooting functional and technical problems

  • Serving as the primary contact for Ex Libris

  • Chairing the Library’s OPAC Display Committee

Maintains Library website. Activities include:

  • Performing web page creation and updates

  • Monitoring currency of pages

  • Ensuring standards compliance

  • Serving as a member of the Library’s Web Structure and Organization Committee (WebSOC)

  • Advising staff on, and implementing new Web technologies

  • Acting as secondary backup to EZproxy for remote access problems

Serves as a member of relevant University groups. At present, these include:

  • Web Liaison Group

  • Web Developers Group

Under the general coordination of the Head of Reference and Instructional Services, provides individual, classroom and group instruction in library services and procedures, search strategies, and the use of information resources.

Under the general coordination of the Head of Reference and Instructional Services, completes 8 hours per month on the Reference Desk.

Under the general coordination of the Associate University Librarian for Technical Services and Collections, serves as a bibliographer to designated academic departments:

  • Oversees the selection of materials in assigned subject areas

  • Assists in collection evaluation

  • Monitors pertinent portions of the acquisitions budget

  • Develops and maintain good relations with faculty members in assigned area(s)

Participates in professional activities, including membership on library and university committees and task forces, membership in professional groups, and attendance at professional meeting.

Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the AUL for Library Systems and University Librarian.

Minimum Qualifications

ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library Science.  Demonstrated good understanding of library routines, functions, library database structure, integrated library systems and the client/server environment.  Basic understanding of network infrastructure and telecommunications.  Demonstrated knowledge of current and evolving Web applications.  Proficient in HTML coding and Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint.  Basic understanding of Microsoft Office Access.  Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team based environment.  Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.  A desire to master new technologies.  Interest in and ability to meet promotion and tenure requirements. 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting integrated library systems, Voyager preferred, and desktop computers.  Experience with UNIX operating systems, Solaris preferred.  Experience working with XML, XSL, and CSS.  Good understanding of SQL and Oracle.  Proficient in Microsoft Office Access.  Experience developing and supporting library web-based services.  Demonstrated ability to think critically, analyze problems, develop and implement creative solutions.

Salary

$40,000; competitive benefits package.
