SYSTEMS AND DIGITAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN
Frostburg State University seeks an innovative, enthusiastic and service-oriented librarian to manage the Lewis J. Ort Library's technology systems and digital services. This position provides significant professional development opportunities for the motivated and ambitious applicant. Available July 2008, this is a full-time (12 month) permanent status-track faculty position. Rank commensurate with experience. Position includes USM benefits package.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides leadership and administers all operational aspects of the Lewis J. Ort Library's information technology systems, including managing and maintaining the Library's computing and networking environment; and providing technical expertise in the selection, development and implementation of new information technologies and their library applications. The person in this position also coordinates and maintains the Library's existing and future digital projects; including identifying appropriate digitization and metadata standards and best practices; establishing workflows; advising on issues of preservation and rights management; and ensuring interoperability among digital library systems. As the Library's digitization coordinator, project management requires working closely with the cataloging, special collections, and reference staff, and representatives from other organizations responsible for digitization, preservation and content management initiatives on and off campus. Additional responsibilities include developing and/or providing user training and support for technology-based library systems and services; serve as liaison with other campus computing and information technology staff, as well as with IT managers of the Library Information Management System shared by the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions Consortium of Libraries. Contributes to the development of the Library's web pages. Serves as a liaison to academic departments in the selection of materials for the Library's collections. As a member of the Library's Technology Division, has a leadership role in policy development and in making operational recommendations to the Assoc. Dir. for Library Technology. Represents the Library on relevant University and USM system-wide committees. Also participates in professional development activities with expectation of promotion in rank and obtaining permanent status.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Masters degree from an ALA accredited program and a thorough understanding of the basic tenets of librarianship, as well as demonstrated potential for professional growth. Applicants must have creative problem solving abilities; excellent organization and analytical skills; experience in installing computing hardware/software and troubleshooting problems; Web development skills; knowledge of database development and administration, specifically MS Access; familiarity with MARC record formats; an understanding of integrated library systems, best practices for digitization, metadata and digital content management, and emerging trends in information technology. Excellent customer service skills, the ability to interact positively and collaboratively with colleagues, faculty and students; and superior oral and written communications skills. Applicants should include evidence of academic accomplishments and a commitment to ongoing development in the profession.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to minimum requirements, documented evidence of successful management of information technology projects, which may include digital projects. Education and/or work experience in a technology-related field, such as computer science, information systems, or digitization services. Working knowledge of digitization procedures and standards. Demonstrated ability to manage personnel and professional projects. Committed to providing highly responsive service. Experience with integrated library systems (preferably Ex Libris'). Understanding of the trends and issues relating to the application of technology in academic libraries. Knowledge of and experience assisting users in accessing information and utilizing electronic databases.
