Houston Public Library, located in the nation’s fourth largest city, serving over 2.5 million Houstonians is looking for a creative, dynamic, energetic and experienced professional Archivist III to work at the African American Library at the Gregory School.

Slated to open in early 2009, the African American Library at the Gregory School will become the third major research library and special collection to be established and operated by the Houston Public Library. The Library will be located in historic Freedman Town and housed in the Gregory Lincoln School, the first African American school in Houston and an Archeological landmark in Texas that will be completely restored. This library will be dedicated to documenting and preserving the traditions, culture, and history of the African American experience in the greater Houston area through special collections, archives, exhibits, oral histories, programs and a variety of media.

The African American Library at the Gregory School will have a significant collection of archival and manuscript materials related to the history of African Americans in Houston. We are looking for an energetic, dynamic, experienced professional to help define and develop successful services and programs for a new, exciting Houston Public Library facility. The ideal candidate will provide oversight for the archival collection for preservation and access; coordinate processing of materials and production of finding aids by staff and volunteers; process and prepare collections for microfilming. Plan and implement digitalization of archival materials; catalog materials and develop finding aids; assists with coordinating exhibits and outreach activities. Provide reference assistance for library customers with in-depth research questions. Train and supervise technical staff. Appraise collections in consultation with curator, and determine preservation needs. The emphasis will be on records and manuscripts, including architectural materials, photographs, oral history and films. Consult, as needed, with appropriate Houston Public Library archival and cataloging staff.

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires an ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science, History or a closely related field.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Three years of experience in archival processing, collecting, or research, historical research, library systems, or a closely related field.

PREFERENCES: Knowledge, education and/or work experience with African American art, history and culture. Special training in archivist fields and/or a Certified Archivist (C.A.). Ability to plan and organize work. Experience with digitization and knowledge of EAD a plus. Customer/public service experience preferred. Knowledge of African American history and culture.
