This talk will provide a foundation for understanding how generative AI produces information, including how “hallucinations,” training data, and bias shape the outputs that we see. The ways that ethical and societal issues underlying AI intersect with core areas of information literacy such as credibility, equity, and interpretation, highlight opportunities for fostering AI literacy and guiding communities towards responsible decisions around AI. In this sense, the librarian’s dividend is not just a metaphor but a call to action — an investment in human expertise as an essential counterbalance to the disruptions in our information ecosystem.
