This week we are excited to spotlight Beatrice Kearns, one of our 2025 graduates! She is currently working as a Media Secretary at Hoover Elementary, her own childhood elementary school! Her favorite part of her job so far is when kids read and love the books she’s suggested to them. Right now, several of her students are reading some of her favorites from when she was their age and getting to see them engage with it makes her day. Another fun part of her new position is that every day is different, her tasks can vary from book rapids, to display curation, to book advisories, or even tackling tech issues.
The impact of SLIS has not been lost on Kearns, in her own words: “SLIS helped me by instilling universal values and standards of librarianship, like resisting censorship and the right to read. I feel really knowledgeable about the foundations that define our profession.” These values can be seen in the pride that Kearns is taking, making her collections more accessible to students. She has been “using circulation data to track what's been popular and what students aren't reaching for” and “recently re-organized our biography section so it's easier for students to browse!”
We are so proud of our school librarians and the impact they are making!
