Learn about our U2G Program

Yes, you may; however, because U2G students must take Core courses during the blended year, you may only take classes for a graduate certificate during your "graduate" or fifth year. Keep in mind, you may not be able to complete all of the certificate requirements because of the timing of courses. Careful planning and communication with the certificate advisor will be important.

Yes, many of our students do not have this experience coming into our program. There are opportunities to work in local libraries during your studies if you are interested. There is also an opportunity to complete a Practicum once you have completed 12 semester hours of SLIS credits.

Yes. Many of our students discover what type of library they wish to work in during their first year in our program and then select classes to specialize in that area. Other students decide to take a variety of classes and choose not to specialize. Both plans have resulted in students getting jobs after graduation.

Transfer students must have 30 semester hours of University of Iowa credits and a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher when they apply.

We want to know why you want to work in a library or information center. You might start with a story about why you decided to apply. Then talk about why this interests you and goals for your career. It is also important to talk about your interest specifically in the University of Iowa SLIS program and how our program can help you achieve your goals.

At least one of your three letters must be an academic reference. If you work in a library, archive, or information center, ask your supervisor to write a letter. You could also ask a former employer to write a letter for you. Remember, the letter writer must have an academic or business email address and be able to address the scope and quality of your past academic work or employment.

We understand that sometimes classes don’t go as anticipated. If your University of Iowa grade point average is 3.25 or higher, you are eligible to apply.

Katie McCullough and Kara Logsden will help you register for your classes the first semester of your blended year. Plan to take SLIS:5010 [and one additional Core class] during your fall semester and SLIS:5030 [and one additional Core class] during your spring semester.

The Graduate College U2G webpage is a great place to start.

These jobs are reserved for students who have “Graduate Student” status. You will have this status once you graduate with your undergraduate degree.
