Biography 

I teach letterpress and bookbinding classes at the UICB. In my own work, I explore the intersection of traditional letterpress technologies and contemporary applications, combining hand-set type with images generated from photopolymer, hand processes, and experimental print techniques. My interest in the traditional craft aspects of book arts technologies was formed here at the UICB, where I studied from 1998-2001. After completion of the Certificate Program, I moved to Minneapolis where I held artist’s residencies at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts (2002-2005) and the Highpoint Center for Printmaking (2003-2004). While at MCBA I printed two of their annual “Winter Books.” I received the MN Fine Press Book Award for my work on “Distance from the Sun” by Louis Jenkins (2005), a Jerome Grant (2003), and an Artist Book Production Grant from the Women’s Studio Workshop. I have taught workshops at Women’s Studio Workshop, Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Minneapolis College of Art + Design, Wells College Book Arts Center, and the University of Utah. My work is represented by Joshua Heller Rare Book, and is in a number of collections including The Library of Congress, The Walker Art Center, and Yale University.

I am interested in collaborations with authors and have worked with the Writers’ Workshop, The International Writers’ Workshop, and the College of Saint Benedict Literary Arts Institute. In my teaching, I try to impart a respect for the traditions and tools of the printing craft, while also opening up the possibilities of print media by encouraging students to ask "what would happen if?" And I really like the smell of ink.
